DNS attacks happen often. This is a bigger one affecting a root DNS provider. The good news is that there are many DNS providers. DNS providers, if you don't know, maintain computer records (to keep it simple) for people to navigate to places. Most of these large companies don't go down. They have thousands of computers (servers) across the globe serving up websites. So if one computer breaks another takes it's place transparently and seamlessly. Paypal, Amazon, Netflix all of them, can't afford to be down 100%. They make untold millions in revenue per minute. The connections to them were jammed and end-users don't know how to circumvent.
What happened today was a "pathway" (DNS provider named Dyn) was compromised temporarily. However, this whole time, each person has the ability to change that "pathway", by switching to another network, like wifi provider, cell phone DNS, change DNS provider manually,..etc. and still connect to sites. The writers sensationalize the information by writing as if Paypal is down. They are not technical enough or don't care to provide a workaround and just promote dire straits. If your internet is down, that's another localized problem. DNS is out the window. You have something worse happening.
But, anytime this happens, you can simply change your DNS provider. You can "Google" how to do it for your machine or device or look at the link I posted above for Windows. You can even find a Public DNS and use that. I use Google DNS. It has always been the most reliable for me. If Google fails, I have my ISP Comcast, which has their own records. Or use my Sprint carrier on my iPhone - they also use a different DNS. (or using the IP addresss of the website hosting machine for those who know what I'm talking about)
All these major enterprises use multiple DNS providers to stay in business 24/7, that's why I was able to reach Paypal and you weren't.... behind the scenes, the companies are not "down", it just appears that way when you can't reach the eCommerce site.
I work for one of the largest companies in the world. Top 10 Fortune organization. Believe me, we have to make sure we keep the money coming in every second or I have to update my resume along with my teamates. :-) We have thousand upon thousands of servers. I am a part of one team among 30 teams maintaining the infrastructure.
Anyways...I'm glad you got your order in. My intention was to help.

Funny you should mention it...
I was at work and it wasn't a big deal, I just waited until later to order.
Like you said, the moneymaking computer was working.
I kicked ass today

@Dblr619
It's very good that you posted up the thread. It was helpful to some folks so than can be aware.
I wouldn't have noticed until I read the news or something like that, or it happened to me. LOL...but I try to avoid US Presidential campaign grind news lately. :-)
I think some would understand why.
