This a great thread, Renny's advice is spot on. Which leads me to say that we should have sticky threads here for newbies. Instead new threads asking the usual questions we could address the points that come up time and time again.

I'd be more than willing to contribute towards a sticky/beginners thread.

This has been stickied since Renny wrote it.
