Hey ClintX2,
Not sure which header you saw, but I'm thinking it was probably the one from dallas apartment reviews. I posted the USA site cause I thought the linking to the forums for each State was kinda unique.
As to patenting technology and being able to stop people from copying your design or content, the answer to that is yes and no.
There are many different programming languages and platforms to build a website with: PHP, ColdFusion, ASP and Microsoft DotNet, just to name a few.
You could build your website and interactive functionality using PHP and somebody else could come along and build something very similar using Microsoft DotNet. Two different technologies, same end result. Try proving in Court that they stole anything from you.
Patents are well and great and they can protect the process used to achieve an end result, but they do not protect concepts and ideas.
The best example is right in front of you; your monitor! A brilliant concept providing a visualization of billions of digital bits and bytes. Surely the inventor patented that idea, right? Yet how many diferent brands of monitors are there on the market?
What about the car? Henry Ford surely must have patented his Model A, but look at how many different manufacturers there are today.
How about your Word Prcessor? I believe it was Clarisworks who sued Microsoft when they released MS Word. And in preparation for a loss, Microsoft quickly developed Works as a replacement . But the Courts ruled that you cannot patent a concept or a word processor!
Yes, you can patent a process and copyright your website, but the reality is all that stops is a copycat from getting hold of your exact code, which they really couldn't do anyway, and creating an exact duplicate of your website and functionality.
Will US Apartment Reviews eliminate the need for real estate agents? Doubtful, but hey I can wish like hell!
